Statement of Purpose

Applicants must send a personal statement of purpose. Please describe why you are interested in public policy and how your academic and/or professional background has influenced your decision to pursue a career in the field of public policy. How and why will the pursuit of your degree at the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy help you to achieve your professional goals? Please be specific and limit your response to no more than two pages. [back]

Certified Copies of Diplomas, Degree Certificates and Transcripts

Applicants must send the following diplomas, documents, certificates, and transcripts as certified true copies (no originals, please):

  • Secondary Education Certificate (Abitur, High School Diploma, etc.)

  • University degree(s) (if already available)

  • Official transcripts from all colleges, professional schools, and universities

All documents not issued in German or English must be accompanied by certified German or English translations.

Note: Simple (i.e., non-certified) copies of diplomas and certificates cannot be accepted as sufficient proof of meeting the admission criteria. A certified true copy is a copy (often a photcopy) of a primary document that has on it an endorsement, a stamp or a certificate that proofs that this is a true copy of the primary document. Certified true copies can be obtained from German Embassies / Consulates or other official authorities in your country of residence.

Please do not sent neither the original documents nor simple copies without certification.

Letters of Recommendation

All applicants must submit at least two letters of recommendation written by different persons who are able to judge the academic and/or professional performance and/or the social skills of the applicant by personal knowledge and experience. Reference persons can include but are not limited to current or former academic instructors, employers, and internship supervisors. Please note that at least one letter must be an academic reference.

Letters of recommendation must be written in English or German.

They can be uploaded to the online application: The applicant provides the referees' names, institutions and official (institutional) telephone numbers and e-mail-addresses. Then, the referees will get an automatic e-mail with a link to the page where they can upload the letter directly and independentely themselves.

Alternatively, they can be sent to us via postal mail directly by the referees themselves, in a sealed and stamped envelope.

Referees should use either an official letterhead or the MPP recommendation form (download here).

Proof of English Proficiency

Candidates coming from a country for which English is not the native language must submit proof of their language proficiency in English (only TOEFL, IELTS, and the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English are accepted). The test results must be submitted as an original document or a certified copy. They can either be sent directly by the testing service to the Brandt School or enclosed in the application package. Please note that according to the official rules and regulations governing the MPP, language tests must have been taken within the past two years. Candidates who received their degree from an university where English is the language of instruction are not required to submit proof of their English language proficiency in the form of a test score report. Instead, they must submit an official letter from their university stating that English was the language of instruction, all coursework, and all examinations. [back]

Copy of your Passport

Applicants are required to send a copy of their passport. Please send copies of the cover of your passport and the pages showing your photo, your name, date and place of birth. [back]
