Brandt School Students visit German Development Institute and United Nations in Bonn

On February 12-13, 2019, second year MPP students from the project group “Building Sustainable Peace”, led by Visiting Scholar Dr. Patrick A. Mello, made a study trip to the German Development Institute (GDI, Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik) and the United Nations in Bonn. The project group includes Camila Pieschacón Barrera, Mostafa Bostani, Maryna Bykova, Munira Hirwani, Mukhammadjon Ikromov, Aditya Laxman Jakki, Rakshit Mohan, Khaled Abu Faisal Mohd, Tovian Estella Nelson, and Angel Peñaranda Trujillo.

The students presented their case study work on the post-conflict countries of Sri Lanka, Nicaragua, and Tajikistan to the GDI researchers Dr. Jörn Grävingholt and Karina Mross, who recently completed a three-year research project on “Supporting Sustainable Peace”, funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). After discussing their work with the GDI researchers and gaining valuable feedback, students learned about ongoing comparative research on democracy support in post-conflict countries.

On the second day of the study trip, the group started off with a visit to the “Haus der Geschichte” to learn about important milestones in contemporary German history. Afterwards, the MPP students met with former German Ambassador Harald Ganns, who provided a vivid talk about the history of the United Nations in Bonn and showed the group around across the United Nations campus. Unbeknown to many, the United Nations are represented in Bonn with about 20 organizations and agencies from within the UN System. Situated around the “Langer Eugen” building that formerly hosted German parliamentarians when Bonn was still the capital city, the UN Campus holds an international staff of about 1,000 people. The UN organizations in Bonn focus on the topics of sustainable development, climate change, disaster risk reduction, and biodiversity, to name just a few key areas.
