We mourn the loss of Professor Dr. Dietmar Herz

It is with great sadness that we bring this news to you. After long illness, Prof. Dr. Dietmar Herz passed away at the age of 59 on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. He has been the founding director of the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy and professor for Comparative Government at the Faculty of Law, Economics, and Social Sciences at the University of Erfurt for many years.

Dietmar Herz studied political science, history, and philosophy of law at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich (LMU). After his graduate degree, he attained a Master of Public Administration at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and successfully completed the bar exam at LMU in 1992. He finished his doctoral studies, in 1992, and his habilitation, in 1996, and worked as a researcher and associate professor (Privatdozent) at the LMU’s Geschwister Scholl Institute of Political Science. In 1997, the University of Bonn appointed him as professor for Political Science.

Dietmar Herz joined the University of Erfurt as professor for Comparative Government, in 2000. During the years 2001 to 2004, he served as the university’s vice president for teaching and studies. From 2004 onwards, he was the vice president for research, young researchers, and international affairs. He was the driving force behind the foundation of the Erfurt School of Public Policy (the future Willy Brandt School of Public Policy) and served as its director from 2002 to 2006 as well as from 2008 to 2009. In 2009, he became a state secretary at the Thuringian Ministry of Justice. In 2015, he returned to the University of Erfurt and the Brandt School.
