Dr. Ursula Backhaus

Dr. Ursula Backhaus became a fellow in health economics at the School of Health Sciences at Maastricht University in 1987. Since 1992, she has been affiliated with the Institute for the Study of Social Science and Forethought. Her publications are mainly in the areas of location theory and the history of public health. She translated Schumpeter's seventh chapter, "`The Economy as a Whole': Seventh Chapter The Theory of Economic Development. Joseph A. Schumpeter." This chapter had been omitted from the 1934 translation of Schumpeter's Theory of Economic Development.

Her dissertation presented to the Faculty of Law at the University of Groningen (2007) is a history of economic thought on public health. Her most recent publication on Franz Oppenheimer, physician and social reformer, appeared in July 2010 in the American Journal of Economics and Sociology.
