“Democracy at a crossroads” – Guest lecture by Norbert Lammert, former President of the Bundestag

On January 31, Prof. Dr. Norbert Lammert gave a guest lecture at the University of Erfurt, asking “Who represents the people?” Professor Lammert, former President of the Bundestag and chairman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, was welcomed by Prof. Dr. Heike Grimm, Director of the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy. The lecture was part of a joint lecture series together with the Thüringer Landtag, the Mediengruppe Thüringen and the University of Erfurt. Due to the overwhelmingly positive resonance, the lecture had to be moved to a bigger lecture hall to accommodate the large number of attendants.

Professor Lammert spoke about “democracy at a crossroads”, citing the rising tension in the German political landscape and the growing polarization of the public. Though populism is on the rise throughout Europe, Professor Lammert remains optimistic and does not see the current situation as the coming of the end of democracy.

We are honored to have welcomed Professor Lammert and thank everyone who attended for their participation.
