Movie Screening and Discussion: “The Lives of Others"

As a kick-off to the movie series as part of the “Songs and Music of War and Peace” course led by Professor Solveig Richter, the CSMP program hosted Willy Brandt School students to a screening of the German film, “The Lives of Others”: a story portraying the story of a Stasi officer who surveils a famous playwright on suspicions that he is not loyal to the Communist party. In lieu of the upcoming 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, the screening created a unique platform to highlight and discuss the mix of political, societal, and individual changes the ushering in of democratization created for many East Germans. Guest speaker, Dr. Ralf J. Leiteritz (School of Political Science and Government at Universidad del Rosario in Bogota, Colombia) joined Professor Solvieg Richter in a post-film talk to discuss their perspectives about being born and growing up in the former GDR to experiencing the peaceful revolution as young adults. Students were able to ask questions on the topics of surveillance, memory and revolution, as well as gain deeper insights into the lived experiences of families and young people who lived in the former GDR.
